James Wan Teases the Creatures We’ll Be Meeting in DC’s “Swamp Thing” Series [Interview]

Aquaman is not the only DC comic James Wan is bringing to the screen. He is also a producer on DC Universe’s Swamp Thing streaming series, with Annabelle, The Nun and Lights Out writer Gary Dauberman writing the show with Mark Verheiden. The show’s main creature will be the transformation of Alec Holland into Swamp Thing, but Wan says he’ll be involved in creating more swamp creatures for the show.

“Of course, that’s part of the appeal,” Wan said during an interview for Aquaman. “I have an amazing team of showrunners and writers on this. Just like I was with Aquaman, we’re very respectful to the source material with Swamp Thing as well.”

While Wan wouldn’t describe any of the creatures he’s considering, he did hint from where they might come from. See which Swamp Thing comics have most inspired the DC Universe series and take your pick from there.

“We’re a big fan of Alan Moore’s take on it so picking a particular story and using that as the foundation to kick it off,” Wan said. “If we’re lucky, we can have many other stories to tell.”

Even though Wan directed the Aquaman movie for DC, creating a television show is a different beast, so to speak.

“It’s different,” Wan said. “It’s for DC streaming and it’s different. It’s for television. It’s just a different medium.”

Swamp Thing premieres on DC Universe in 2019.

‘Alita’ Battles Derek Mears (Jason Voorhees) In First Clip [Video]

Fox has released the first clip from Robert Rodriguez‘s sci-fi thriller Alita: Battle Angel, a feature film based on the Japanese manga series “Gunnm” by Yukito Kishiro that’s now releasing Valentine’s Day weekend after being bumped out of Christmas.

The footage is an extended sequence of a scene shown in the trailer where the title character is ambushed in an alley and kicks the crap out of her assaulters. The first, interestingly enough, is played by Derek Mears (Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th remake and Swamp Thing in the forthcoming series).

Set in the 26th century…

“Alita tells of a female cyborg that is discovered in a scrapyard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals. The action-adventure story is meant to serve as a backdrop to themes of self-discovery and the search for love.”

The cast includes Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson.

Jason Voorhees Actor Cast as Lead in SWAMP THING TV Series

Horror fans remember him best as the man behind the hockey mask in 2009’s Friday the 13th reboot; now, Derek Mears will be playing the titular vegetable-based antihero in the Swamp Thing TV series currently in the works at DC Universe. The news also came with casting news regarding Mears’ human counterpart: Andy Bean will play biologist Alec Holland.

According to THR:

Swamp Thing, adapted from the DC Entertainment comic character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, is being produced by [James Wan’s] Atomic Monster in association with Warner Bros. Television. The first episode of the series will be co-written by showrunners Mark Verheiden, whose credits include Battlestar Galactica and Daredevil, and IT screenwriter Gary Dauberman, with Len Wiseman directing. Verheiden, Dauberman, Wiseman, Michael Clear, and Aquaman helmer James Wan are executive producers.

DC Universe Officially Announce Mears, Bean Added to ‘Swamp Thing’

The swamp just added some elite company.  According to their official Twitter account (see below), the DC Universe has announced that genre veterans Derek Mears and Andy Bean have joined the cast of the upcoming series adaptation of Swamp Thing.  DC is continuing to add to its stable of content for their new streaming service, with the exclusive series Titans already four episodes in to its initial run on the network.

For Swamp Thing, based on the comic book which debuted in 1971 but rose to prominence in the mid-80’s after legendary writer Alan Moore took the reins, this will be the second attempt at a television series.  In the early 1990’s, the USA network hosted a live action adaptation starring Dick Durock and Mark Lindsay Chapman which ran for three seasons.  The current Swamp Thing project boasts a robust and impressive cast already for DC.  Mears and Bean will be joining the already-announced roster of Jennifer Beals (The Grudge 2), Virginia Madsen (Candyman), Will Patton (2018’s Halloween) and Crystal Reed (MTV’s Teen Wolf.)

The two newest additions will be portraying the same character, though in completely different capacities.  Bean (the upcoming IT: Chapter Two) will play biologist Alec Holland, who bonds with CDC researcher Abby Arcane (Reed) as she investigates a malicious virus appearing to originate in the swamps of Louisiana.  Holland’s exposure to this virus transforms him into the titular character, Swamp Thing.

The grotesque alter ego of Holland will be portrayed by horror genre favorite Mears, who is known for taking on several iconic roles in the horror realm within the past two decades.  He was Jason Voorhees in the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th as well as the Predator in 2010’s Predators.  Mears, a regular on the horror convention circuit, has also appeared in various popular shows such as True Blood, Teen Wolf and Sleepy Hollow.  His menacing presence in the monstrous role will be a welcome sight to see, just as DC is hoping.

Swamp Thing will also have red-hot horror royalty in its ranks, as Hollywood heavyweight director James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring) will assume the role of executive producer.  As of now, Len Wiseman (Underworld) is the attached director though it’s unclear if he will oversee each episode.  DC Universe has yet to announce any further production details for the show.

Stay tuned to HNN for more news on Swamp Thing as it breaks!

‘It: Chapter Two’ Star Andy Bean to Play Human Version of “Swamp Thing”

While Derek Mears was previously cast as the title character in the new “Swamp Thing” series, TheWrap reports that It: Chapter Two star Andy Bean will play Alec Holland, the human version of the character.

Explains the site:

“The character is described as emerging from the swamp with a monstrous physique and strange new powers over plant life, the man who was once Alec Holland struggles to hold onto his humanity. When dark forces converge on the town of Marais, Swamp Thing must embrace what he has become in order to defend the town as well as the natural world at large. Prior to his life as the elemental hero, Holland was a biologist who gets caught in the crosshairs of a small town nightmare, when he discovers a bizarre local illness may be connected to his work in the swamp.”

Per DC Universe, “Swamp Thing” follows Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.

Breaking: Derek Mears Is SWAMP THING?

DC has an all-new Swamp Thing TV series in the works with James Wan producing, Gary Dauberman (IT) and Mark Verheiden writing, and Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) helming the pilot episode.

And today we have word via Slash Report that the new series may have found it’s lead creature in the form of Derek Mears (Friday the 13th, Hatchet III). None of this has been confirmed at the moment, but it looks like Mears plays only the creature, not Dr. Alec Holland.

Derek Mears Cast as Swamp Thing in the Upcoming DC Universe Television Series

Derek Mears is no stranger to monster roles, having played Jason Voorhees (in the 2009 Friday the 13th reboot), a Predator, and many other aliens and creatures of the night over the course of his career.  Well, it’s time to add another to Mear’s extensive menagerie, as the over-sized actor just landed a plumb role as the title character in DC Universe’s upcoming Swamp Thing television series.

Splash Report broke the news earlier today and they also added that while Mears will play Swamp Thing (in a practical effects suit nonetheless) he will not be portraying the soul of the monster, Dr. Alec Holland.  At this time it is not clear who will play Holland, or how they will incorporate the performances of both the monster and his human (or plant) soul.

The series is supposedly heavily based on the seminal Alan Moore run of the 1980’s, which brought the legendary comic book writer to prominence before his series The Watchmen changed the medium forever.  Producer and writer Gary Dauberman recently confirmed these details in a interview with Slashfilm and went on to say that “It’s the origin story of the Swamp Thing and it’s Alec Holland wrestling with who he’s become.  A lot of it’s told through the point of view of Abby Arcane.’  Dauberman also confirmed that the series would be true to the odd nature of Moore’s series, stating that “Fans of that series will know it gets pretty weird and extreme and scary… we always set out to make Swamp Thing as hard R as we could and go graphic with the violence, with the adult themes and make it as scary as possible.”

The series is set to debut on the DC Universe streaming service in 2019, so be sure to keep checking back with Horror News Network for more casting news as it is announced.
