Shudder Presents Joe Bob Briggs’ ‘Dinners of Death’ This Thanksgiving Eve

Movie marathons related to holidays are near and dear to every genre fan. If you were lucky enough to grow up in the New York City area, Thanksgiving offered one of the best two day marathons around with a “giant ape” marathon on Thanksgiving (the original Mighty Joe Young, King Kong, and Son of Kong) and a “Godzilla-fest” on the following day on what has come to be known as “Black Friday” on WWOR-Channel Nine.

This year, Shudder will celebrate two grand horror traditions on Thanksgiving Night with not only a horror marathon, but also the return of horror host Joe Bob Briggs for Dinners of Death.

Briggs spoke to comicbook.com about the upcoming special, saying that “Most holidays have a lot of horror films based on that holiday, but Thanksgiving is an exception…But both events are, they’re mini-marathons. They’re not the 13-movie marathons. They’re four movies. Each one is four movies, but because I talk so much, they’re gonna go to dawn. You know, they’re gonna be long.”  Briggs has also promised that one of his selections is his favorite movie of all-time, although he is being tight-lipped about the reveal, naturally.

Briggs is well-known in the horror community due to his previous programs such as Joe Bob’s Drive-In Theater and TNT’s MonsterVision. Briggs hosted his first Shudder marathon earlier this year with The Last Drive-In, a 24-hour marathon on Shudder. To say that the initial marathon was a success is an understatement, as the program not only crashed the network servers, but also resulted in Shudder announcing two more holiday specials, and a regular series in 2019.

Dinners of Death airs on Shudder on Thursday, November 22nd at 9 p.m. and A Very Joe Bob Christmas debuts on December 21st.

Orion Pictures Lands ‘Casa’

Deadline is reporting that Orion Pictures has acquired Casa, a pitch from filmmaking brothers Andres and Diego Meza-Valdes. The flick is described as a socially conscious horror-thriller with an intergenerational tale centering on a Latino family.

The brothers commented on the project saying that “My brother and I have been genre fans our whole lives growing up in Miami. We are excited that we get to make such a terrifying story with a filmmaker-supportive group and especially the Orion brand that we’re such fans of.”

The brothers have gained notoriety with their 22-minute short film Boniato which played at Sundance back in 2015. A Vimeo page run by the siblings offers a glimpse of their work including Night Sirens, Haunt Ed, Play Dead, The Room, and Halfway. The duo also directed the third episode of Season 3 of Ash vs Evil Dead.

Library of Congress Restores 1910 ‘Frankenstein’ Short Film, Makes Video Available for Free

I’ve never been more proud to be a taxpayer! The Library of Congress has been involved in numerous important projects related to the preservation of film, but none hit closer to home for horror fans than their restoration of the first film version of Frankenstein. Produced in 1910 by the Edison Manufacturing Company, this 12 minute short laid the foundation for the Gothic atmosphere and hulking creature that would soon be improved upon and immortalized by James Whale and Boris Karloff. In a recent guest blog post by Mike Mashon– the head of the Moving Image Section of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division- the institute details the painstaking lengths they went to in restoring and preserving the print for future generations:

“While it came in a fairly nondescript can, it didn’t take us long to get the reel into our film preservation lab for a 2K scan in advance of photochemical preservation. From that 2K scan, we worked on a digital restoration. The film’s head credits and the first intertitle were missing, but fortunately the Edison Historic Site in East Orange, New Jersey, had a copy of the head credit we could drop into place; the intertitle was recreated using the style of the other titles. We asked Donald Sosin, a highly regarded silent film composer and accompanist, to provide a score.”

Even better, because the project is the result of our tax dollars at work, the film is available for free for all to see or download. You can view the film in its entirety by clicking this link.

Stay tuned to Horror News Network for complete coverage of The Library of Congress’ other important initiatives in the world of horror film, and all things Frankenstein!

Apple Teams With A24 to Produce Slate of Films

Variety is reporting that Apple has entered into an agreement with A24 to will produce a slate of films for the tech giant. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this agreement as many of A24’s flicks receive an R rating while Apple is known as a family-oriented company. While there are no details as of yet on the deal, it is said to be a multiyear agreement and involve multiple films.

Since coming on the scene in 2012, A24 has brought a solid slate of horror/sci-fi films including Ex Machina, The Witch, The Blackcoat’s Daughter, It Comes at Night, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and Hereditary. As of 2018, A24 has received a whopping twenty-four Academy Award nominations.

The deal with Apple does not affect the current deals A24 currently has in place with DirecTV to acquire films for US distribution and their deal with Amazon which its films appear on Amazon Prime.

‘Catlevania’ Executive Producer Developing Animated ‘Devil May Cry’ Series

Netflix’s Castlevania animated series wowed fans and critics alike with its impressive visuals and faithfulness to the source material. Now, executive producer Adi Shankar is hoping to capture lightning in a bottle again with an all-new animated series based on another popular Gothic video game: Devil May Cry!

Shankar broke the news in a recent interview with IGN, and he later followed up with an announcement post on Twitter:

In the IGN interview, Shankar confirmed that he personally acquired the rights to Devil May Cry. He also stated that Devil May Cry, “will join Castlevania in what we’re now calling the bootleg multiverse.” He did not elaborate on whether he intends to create a literal crossover between Castlevania– which is a property owned by Konami- and Capcom’s Devil May Cry, or if he meant that the two series would be interconnected stylistically. How an actual multiverse with crossover characters might work given the fact that the two franchises are owned by two different video game companies remains to be seen. What we do know is that Shankar knows the material well and he has a proven track record for creating faithful adaptations of this kind of material.

Shankar did not announce which streaming service Devil May Cry will debut on, but another Netflix deal would certainly improve the chances of a multiverse coming to fruition. Stay tuned to Horror News Network for complete coverage of this exciting new project as soon as it breaks!

R.L. Stine’s ‘Fear Street’ Films Still in the Works

Although it has been a while since we heard anything about the Fear Street films R.L. Stine took to Twitter to alleviate concerns and confirm that three Fear Street movies are still in the works at Fox.

Leigh Janiak is handling the writing and directing of all three movies which could be shot and released back-to-back-to-back. Janiak is known for directing the unsetting 2014 film Honeymoon which tells the story of a newlywed couple whose honeymoon descends into chaos after the groom fins his wife wandering and disoriented in the middle of the night. Janiak has also went on to direct an episode of Outcast and two episodes of Scream: The TV Series.

In 1989 the first Fear Street book The New Girl was published by Simon Pulse.  While the books weren’t as successful as his Goosebumps series, Fear Street still sold over 80 million books and appealed to an older audience of readers.
