Mary Lambert Spearheading Restoration of Original PET SEMATARY

Sometimes, remakes are better—but you’ve got to respect the originals!

With a new cinematic adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary arriving in theaters next April, chances are the first one will be getting renewed attention. While some aspects of that film haven’t aged well, most horror aficionados still regard 1989’s Pet Sematary as a terrifying masterpiece, one that reigns as one of the most arresting supernatural shockers of the 1980s.

It’s timely, then, that original Pet Sematary director Mary Lambert is currently spearheading a restoration with Paramount Pictures. The lauded filmmaker made the announcement via Twitter:

“I spent #FemaleFilmakerFriday working at @ParamountPics on the restoration of Pet Sematary. HDR Color Grading & Dolby Vision. Looks gorgeous!! Their team is amazing! I’d love to direct another project for Paramount one day. Xo”

We haven’t gotten an official announcement, meaning we don’t have a release date or an inkling of potential special features, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for further updates. Stay tuned! In the meantime, check out the synopsis and trailer for 1989’s Pet Sematary below, followed by the synopsis and trailer for 2019’s Pet Sematary. Enjoy!

Doctor Louis Creed (Dale Midkiff) moves his family to Maine, where he meets a friendly local named Jud Crandall (Fred Gwynne). After the Creeds’ cat is accidentally killed, Crandall advises Louis to bury it in the ground near the old pet cemetery. The cat returns to life, its personality changed for the worse. When Louis’ son, Gage (Miko Hughes), dies tragically, Louis decides to bury the boy’s body in the same ground despite the warnings of Crandall and Louis’ visions of a deceased patient.

Dr. Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, relocate from Boston to rural Maine with their two young children. The couple soon discover a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his neighbor Jud Crandall, setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unspeakable evil with horrific consequences.

Pet Sematary is directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer and stars Jason Clarke, John Lithgow, and Amy Seimetz.

Jacob Tremblay Joins the Cast of THE SHINING Sequel DOCTOR SLEEP

Barely a tween, Child actor Jacob Tremblay has already made some serious inroads into the horror genre with films like The Predator, Shut In, and Before I Wake under his belt (along with many other non-horror roles in film and television). Before I Wake was directed by Mike Flanagan and, this week came news that the actor and filmmaker will reunite on the set of Doctor Sleep, a sequel to Stephen King’s bestselling novel The Shining.

While Tremblay’s role is still under wraps, he joins previously announced cast members Rebecca Ferguson (playing Rose the Hat), Alex Essoe (playing Wendy Torrance), and Ewan McGregor (playing a now-adult Danny Torrance). Poised to go before cameras this year, Doctor Sleep is targeting a January 2020 release date. It’ll be some time before we get any official images or a trailer, but we’ll be keeping our ears to the ground in order to bring you all Doctor Sleep-related news as details emerge. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, you can give the synopsis for the novel Doctor Sleep a read below.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to this icon in the Stephen King canon.

Award-Winning Punk Rock Horror THE RANGER Available Via Redbox Next Week!

I first saw the scrappy, indie horror The Ranger at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin last March. I immediately declared it to be the most authentically punk rock genre flick since Return of the Living Dead. Since then, I’ve watched on the sidelines as the film worked its way through the festival circuit, screening in a bevy of countries on multiple continents, picking up a boatload of accolades along the way.

I even had the honor of introducing The Ranger and leading a Q&A following the film’s screening at The Alamo Drafthouse in San Francisco in late October. We recently reported that come 2019, the streaming service Shudder will become the permanent digital residence for The Ranger, but if you can’t wait that long, we’ve got some good news to relay!

The Ranger will be available at Redbox kiosks across the country beginning next week (November 20th). The announcement came with the new poster above (well, maybe it isn’t new, but this is the first I’ve seen of it). Believe me, The Ranger is an irreverent, gory romp set to a blistering soundtrack that you don’t want to miss! Give the synopsis and trailer a spin below.

A group of punk teens are terrorized by a park ranger’s brand of psychotic justice in Blackwood Point National Park. Their plans to seek refuge and drug-fueled abandon in the woods after one of them stabs a policeman during a drug raid soon turns into a nightmare.

The Ranger is directed by Jenn Wexler from a script she co-wrote with Giaco Furino; the film stars Chloe Levine, Jeremy Holm, Granit Lahu, Jeremy Pope, Bubba Weiler, Amanda Grace Benitez, Jete Laurence, Larry Fessenden, Clay Mcleod Chapman, Jim Johnson, and Nicholas Tucci.
