Netflix Says “The Haunting of Hill House” Was One of Their Most Binged Shows

Netflix issued a series of fun press releases that celebrate their biggest hits, one of which was the Mike Flanagan-directed masterpiece “The Haunting of Hill House”. According to their undisclosed stats, “The Haunting of Hill House” (read our review) was one of the most binged shows/films this year, although I find it depressing it landed behind the god-awful second season of “13 Reasons Why”.

It should also be noted that this is a breakdown of “the highest average watch time per viewing session based on U.S. data,” which means this list is more for fun than actual accuracy.

  1. On My Block
  2. Making a Murderer: Part 2
  3. 13 Reasons Why: Season 2
  4. Last Chance U: INDY
  5. Bodyguard
  6. Fastest Car
  7. The Haunting of Hill House
  8. Anne with an E: Season 2
  9. Insatiable
  10. Orange Is the New Black: Season 6

“The Haunting of Hill House” is a complex family drama wrapped in a chilling horror story…

“A modern reimagining of Shirley Jackson‘s iconic novel, “The Haunting of Hill House” explores a group of siblings who, as children, grew up in what would go on to become the most famous haunted house in the country.  Now adults, and forced back together in the face of tragedy, the family must finally confront the ghosts of their past — some of which still lurk in their minds while others may actually be stalking the shadows of Hill House.”

Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, Timothy Hutton, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Henry Thomas, Kate Siegel and Victoria Pedretti star, along with Lulu Wilson, McKenna Grace, Paxton Singleton, Violet McGraw and Julian Hilliard.

The 10-episode series hit Netflix on October 12.

“Haunting of Hill House” Composers the Newton Brothers Will Score Mike Flanagan’s ‘Doctor Sleep’

Filming has wrapped on Mike Flanagan‘s Doctor Sleep, an adaptation of Stephen King’s same-named sequel to The Shining, and THR reports today that the Newton Brothers will re-team with Flanagan to compose the film’s score. The duo, whose real names are Andy Grush and Taylor Stewart, scored Gerald’s Game and “The Haunting of Hill House.”

The Shining is such an impressive piece of work in all forms, and Doctor Sleep picks up from that in such a brilliant way. Stephen King is incomparable,” the Newton Brothers said in a statement. “Working with Mike is an incredible honor every time. The material he works with, the stories he tells and adapts, the talent, the crew, the producers … everyone involved brings their A-game every time and it inspires us to create the absolute best score for the film that we possibly can. It’s humbling to be on this team.”

Carl Lumbly was recently tapped to play Dick Hallorann with Alex Essoe playing Wendy Torrance in the continuation of the storyline from The ShiningKyliegh Curran has been cast in the role of Abra Stone, a girl who has the gift of ‘The Shining’. Bruce Greenwood plays the role of Dr. John. Alyn Lind is Snakebite Andi, with Jocelin Donahue also starring.

Jacob Tremblay, Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson also star. McGregor stars as the adult version of Danny Torrance, while Ferguson plays Rose the Hat.

Flanagan rewrote Akiva Goldsman’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 2013 novel that picks up the life of the Redrum kid when he is in his 40s and struggling with the same demons of anger and alcoholism that plagued his father.

Doctor Sleep hits theaters on Jan. 24, 2020.

That’s a Wrap! Filming Ends on Mike Flanagan’s THE SHINING Sequel DOCTOR SLEEP

Expect the Stephen King Renaissance that began in 2017 with the tremendous success of Andy Muschietti’s IT to return with a vengeance beginning in April 2019 when Pet Sematary arrives in US theaters nationwide. That movie will be followed by Muschietti’s sequel, IT: Chapter Two, in September. Then, in January of 2020, we’ll be seeing Mike Flanagan’s hotly-anticipated sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep!

Flanagan took to Facebook late last night to announce that principal photography on Doctor Sleep has wrapped! In addition to breaking the good news, he took a moment to talk about what the experience has meant to him:

“So that’s a wrap on DOCTOR SLEEP! It’s been a long, crazy, truly unique experience. I read the novel as soon as it came out back in 2013, fascinated and moved by the epic story of Dan Torrance and Abra Stone, but I never imagined for a moment that I’d be the person to bring it to the big screen. It’s been an honor to spend the last five months with this fantastic cast and crew, and to be trusted with Stephen King’s extraordinary story. One of the highlights of my career, without a doubt.

“Shine on, everyone. Shine on.”

It’ll be ages until we get a trailer for Doctor Sleep, but we can probably expect some “First Looks” to emerge in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for all Doctor Sleep-related news as details emerge; stay tuned!

Doctor Sleep stars Rebecca Ferguson, Jacob Tremblay, and Ewan McGregor; its official release date is January 24th, 2020. You can check out the synopsis to the source material, Stephen King’s novel, below.

Synopsis:
On highways across America, a tribe of people called the True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky twelve-year-old Abra Stone learns, the True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel, where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, glorious story that will thrill the millions of devoted readers of The Shining and satisfy anyone new to this icon in the Stephen King canon.

Before I Wake was directed by Mike Flanagan and, this week came news that the actor and filmmaker will reunite on the set of Doctor Sleep, a sequel to Stephen King’s bestselling novel The Shining.
