Voice Actors Announced + First Images Released from Netflix’s THE DARK CRYSTAL Prequel

It’s been a week since a behind-the-scenes Instagram post gave us our first look at the practical puppetry being utilized in Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a 10-episode prequel to The Dark Crystal, released in 1982. It featured a sword-wielding Skeksis warrior and, while it wasn’t an especially detailed look, it was enough to get our blood pumping!

Today, Netflix has announced the cast of voice actors who will be voicing the Gelflings, Mystics, and Skeksis. The most insightful reveal, however, is that Donna Kimball will be voicing a younger version of Aughra, the frightening yet profound astronomer who played an integral role in 1982’s The Dark Crystal. Here’s the rest of the cast:

Gelfling characters:

  • Caitriona Balfe(Outlander)
  • Helena Bonham-Carter(The King’s Speech)
  • Harris Dickinson(forthcoming Maleficent 2)
  • Natalie Dormer(Game of Thrones)
  • Eddie Izzard(Ocean’s Thirteen)
  • Theo James(The Divergent Series)
  • Toby Jones(Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)
  • Shazad Latif(Star Trek: Discovery)
  • Gugu Mbatha-Raw(The Cloverfield Paradox)
  • Mark Strong(Kingsman)
  • Alicia Vikander(Tomb Raider)

The Skeksis and Mystics:

  • Harvey Fierstein(Torch Song)
  • Mark Hamill(Knightfall, Star Wars)
  • Ralph Ineson(Game of Thrones)
  • Jason Isaacs(The OA)
  • Keegan-Michael Key(Key and Peele)
  • Ólafur Darri Ólafsson(True Detective)
  • Simon Pegg(Mission Impossible)
  • Andy Samberg(Brooklyn Nine Nine)

Today’s announcement also came with a few images that are actually from the upcoming prequel (as opposed to messy, behind-the-scenes peeks). In addition to the cast members mentioned above, Taron Egerton (Kingsman), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), and Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones) will play Rian, Brea and Deet respectively; these three Gelfling characters are pictured below.

We still don’t have a release date or a real trailer, but we’ll bring them to you just as soon as they drop, so stay tuned!

Synopsis:
Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.

Based on The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson’s groundbreaking 1982 feature film, “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” tells a new epic story, set many years before the events of the movie, and realized using classic puppetry with cutting edge visual effects. The world of Thra is dying. The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, a source of untold power. But it is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis, and a sickness spreads across the land. When three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.

Louis Leterrier (Now You See MeThe Incredible Hulk) will executive produce the series and direct. “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” will be a Netflix original series produced by The Jim Henson Company and executive produced by Letterier, Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford. Longtime Henson collaborator Rita Peruggi will serve as producer and Henson’s Blanca Lista will serve as a co-executive producer. Leading the writing are co-executive producers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, and Javier Grillo-Marxuach.

First Look at Sword-Wielding Skeksis Warrior from THE DARK CRYSTAL Prequel Coming to Netflix

A prequel to 1982’s The Dark Crystal (in the form of a 10-episode Netflix series called Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) was first announced in 2017, but except for a murmur here and a mutter there, there’s been little in terms of news or updates on the project in 2018. In an age of leaks and few (if any) secrets, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop has done an incredible job of keeping the production under wraps… which is what makes this picture so exciting.

Creature designer and fabrication supervisor Tim Clarke shared a picture of a sword-wielding Skeksis warrior via Instagram. It reveals the production is using actual puppets against a green screen, so we can look forward to plenty more exciting practical effects to come. Could this be a younger version of the Emperor who died in the first act of Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal, triggering a power struggled among the Skeksis?

Give it a look-see below, followed by the synopsis and announcement teaser for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. We’ll keep you posted as news emerges so stay tuned!

Behind the Scenes Image from Netflix’s “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” Shows Old School Puppetry at Work

One of the most exciting projects coming our way next year is Netflix and the Jim Henson Company’s “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a television series set to be a prequel to the 1982 film, The Dark Crystal.  The 10-episode fantasy adventure series takes place many years before the events of the film, and it will star an ensemble of fantastical, state-of-the-art creatures created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop™ and Brian Froud, the original feature’s conceptual designer. And yes, we’re talking classic/old school puppets, with no CGI involved!

The only digital effects in the series will be green-screening to remove the puppeteers from view, and this first behind the scenes shot from the set delivers good on that promise.

Shared by toy artist Tim Clarke, who worked as a creature designer and fabrication supervisor on the original Dark Crystal, the behind scenes photo shows a Skeksis coming to life, primarily thanks to practical puppetry. The puppeteer is wearing a green-screen outfit so that he can be digitally removed in post, but everything else here is entirely practical.

Brian Henson Offers Enthusiastic Updates on Netflix’s THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE

It’s been over a year since we’ve gotten any solid updates on Netflix’s 10-episode series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. It’s a joint project with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and Brian Froud, who served as concept designer on the original Dark Crystal, released in 1982. Fortunately, producer Brian Henson participated in a panel at DragonCon last weekend, where he talked it up but good!

While we didn’t get any specific details, Henson’s enthusiasm suggests the series will be worth the wait. In his own words:

“It’s been shooting since last November and it’s so cool that Netflix could get behind it in such a big way so that we can do it right. I say ‘we’, but I’ve been doing Happytime Murders, so it’s really my sister’s [Lisa Henson] and Halle Stanford‘s project. They’ve really put together a great, great time in London.

“And I’ll be honest, I thought those days were gone. I thought by the 80’s, the idea of being able to walk onto a stage and see an incredible fantasy world realized was just long gone because of CG and everything like that. But they’ve really done it right. It’s great! The workmanship is just stunning, the artistic quality is right there again; what I thought maybe was lost, it’s still there. They’ll be shooting for another few weeks, and then there will be a huge amount of post-production.”

An official synopsis remains elusive, but we’d previously been told that The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a prequel to the film; at DragonCon, Henson clarified: “OK, well, we’ve said it’s a prequel, and it’s not an immediate prequel, so it doesn’t end when the movie started. It takes place significantly earlier than when the movie took place.”

The Dark Crystal remains a beautiful anomaly over 35 years after its release. The story merged metaphysical fantasy and horror elements in a way that wasn’t dumbed-down for children. It was a sharp departure from The Muppets that made Jim Henson and Frank Oz household names, yet its status and legacy have only grown in the decades since it first hit theaters.

You can check out last year’s announcement trailer for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance below, followed by the synopsis and trailer for the original Dark Crystal.

Synopsis:
Jen (Stephen Garlick), raised by the noble race called the Mystics, has been told that he is the last survivor of his own race, the Gelflings. He sets out to try to find a shard of the dark crystal, a powerful gem that once provided balance to the universe. After the crystal was broken, the evil Skeksis used sinister means to gain control. Jen believes that he can repair the dark crystal and bring peace back to the world, if he can only find the remaining shard.
