WHAT IS SCHLOCK?
It really depends on who you ask. It is a Yiddish word that often means “subpar”. It is sometimes used in the same vein as “crap” but these days it is used with less negative connotation.
u/Edrenfro, a keen Redditor defined it as:
“The disconnect between the logical and emotional parts of your mind. When a movie is objectively stupid, immature or nonsensical but you experience pleasure from it anyway, you call it schlock.”
We tend to agree with this definition!
Most popular schlock is low budget either horror or science fiction/fantasy, with a few dramas and comedies in the mix, but it is a Horror and Sci-Fi heavy title.
A GENRE WITHIN A GENRE
We like to think of schlock as a genre all of its own. A genre that transcends the nichey definitions like horror or science fiction. Its almost higher level of some sort of wacky hierarchy chart.
IS IT A MOVIE?
IS IT SCHLOCK OR NOT SCHLOCK?
I guess we will never really have a true handle on the categorization of it all, but we can almost all agree on schlock once we have seen it.
- If the production value is dated It might be schlock
- If some (or all) of the acting quality is bad it might be schlock
- If any of the actors worked in adult movies it might be schlock
- If the movie released only on VHS or DVD then it might be schlock
- If cover art looks like an acid trip or a comic book it might be schlock
- If the tagline reads “From the depths” It might be schlock
Well, there are a million ways to recognize schlock, yet there is a vast difference between “schlock” and “crap”. Schlock is something you can appreciate. It’s a movie that you will remember. A movie that you will quote lines form with your friends. It is far from crap.
WE LOVE THE SCHLOCK!
We are a group of Schlock craving guys! We love long schlocks and short schlocks, cut or uncut we don’t care because when we get some schlock in our face we just take it all in and talk about it on a podcast!
We really love Schlock Movies… Can’t you tell?
OUR SCHLOCKY PODCAST
Our podcast is created from the love of the art of film and those that had a vision and the will to make a movie. We love to see the evolution of movies over the years including, special effects, acting styles, camera angles, and music/sound effects.
We are also brutally honest and our opinions may not reflect the popular opinion of a movie. Heck, even the hosts may not share the same point of view on the film.
Even a bad review will not deter our appreciation for the art form, and by calling or classifying any movie as “Schlock” is NOT a derogatory comment, and NOT meant in any negative way.
So if we call a movie good or bad it is our own personal opinion and does not reflect the views of anyone but us as individuals. Not our sponsors, network, or anyone else but us.
PUT OUR SCHLOCKS IN YOUR EAR!
We hope you will listen and if you do please give us 5 stars on your favorite podcast site or app and leave us an awesome review! We might reach out to you and send you something awesome! (A random Schlock Box!) Shhh our secret!
